History
and Features
Chichibu Nassen (print) from the latter half of Edo era (1603-1867)
to Meiji era (1868-1912) were developed as home clothes with simple
color using natural dye.
Chichibu Nassen has its roots in the traditional method of producing
Chichibu textiles. A characteristic of it is Hogushi (unbinding) patterns
on the warps. First a patterned paper is placed by hand on the warps,
then the warps are dyed with a brush soaked in dye and one color is
put on top of another. This method is called "Hogushi Nassen"
because workers weave temporarily unbinding the woven wefts.
The method of Hogushi Nassen grew rapidly from the Shigoki Nassen
method to the Tateito (the warps) Nassen method and the Seikei (the
arranging warps) Nassen method. Characteristic of it is a kind of
splashed pattern on the warps as well as the original deep tone of
colors being blended with the color of the wefts.
