| The
Chichibu Pilgrimage Route |
 |
| Faith
in the bodhisattva Kannnon has deep roots in Japan, and one of its
expressions is making a pilgrimage on foot to a series of Kannon temples.
Making that "journey for two --- walking with Kannon" is
still a popular act of devotion that draws many pilgrims to Chichibu's
34 Kannon temples. While covering the full route takes six to ten
days on foot and two to four by car, electing to visit a smaller group
of temples in one or two days can provide a satisfying glimpse of
the pilgrimage experience and the beauties of Chichibu. |
Nakatsukyo
(Otaki Village) |
|
| The
deep valley has been carved by the stream of Nakatsu River, which
flows all the way from Jumonji Pass at the border with Nagano Prefecture.
The virgin forest looks fascinating in the fresh green or in the autumn
colors, praised as the best scenic beauty in the Okuchichibu area.
Designated as a prefectural scenic spot. |

| Ryusei
Hall |
 |
|
Ryusei Hall is dedicated
to exploring the history and manufacturing of ryusei (dragon power)
rockets, which are set off as part of a ritual in the Ryusei Autumn
Festival at the Muku-Jinja (Shrine) on the second Sunday in October
each year. These rockets consist of tubes 10 centimeters in diameter
packed with gunpowder and attached to bamboo poles. Shot off from
the top of a 20 meter tower, they soar 300 to 400 meters into the
air with a horrific howling that, it's said, sounds like a dragon---hence
the name.
Stop by at Ryusei Hall for detailed information on the history and
the manufacturing process of ryusei rockets.
Hours open:9a.m. - 4:30p.m.
